엄계용 문화체육관광국장은 1일 시흥시청 브리핑룸에서 개최한 언론브리핑을 통해, 7월 18일부터 20일까지 ‘WSL 시흥 코리아 오픈 국제서핑대회’를 개최한다고 밝혔다.

거북섬 시흥웨이브파크에서 열리는 이번 대회에는 세계 16개국232명이 참가해 숏보드 QS 6,000 포인트 부문과 롱보드 QS 1,000 포인트 종목에서 열띤 경쟁을 펼친다.

시흥시가 WSL을 개최한 것은 지난 2023년에 이어 올해가 두 번째다. 특히, 2023년에는 숏보드 QS 3,000 포인트 대회였지만, 올해는 세계 최초이자 유일의 인공풀 QS 6,000 포인트 대회로 한층 격상됐다.

대회는 18일 예선전을 시작으로, 19일 본선, 20일 결승전이 진행된다. 일본의 니시 케이지로, 미국의 양 카이옌 리 등 세계 랭킹 30위 이내의 선수들과 더불어 국내 랭킹 3위 이내인 시흥시체육회 소속 박수진, 이나라, 임수정 선수가 출전해 열기를 더할 것으로 기대된다.
